I know when my children were younger, I loved to be in my kitchen with them doing fun and exciting activities. We would cover the kitchen table with shaving cream, cook play dough, make orange butter and so on. The list goes on and on of the fun times we had together in that one room in our home. It’s a great way to spend quality time together while also allowing them to express their creativity through fun filled activities. Cooking in the kitchen with your children teaches them how things change, develops small motor control and builds self-confidence. My kids looked forward to this time of the day with great anticipation and always wondered what I had come up with for the day. Here are some of my favorite food activities I enjoyed with my children when they were younger and I hope you will do the same.
Edible Play Dough
1 cup of peanut butter
1 cup of corn syrup
1-½ cups powdered milk
1-½ cups powdered sugar
Directions: Mix all of the ingredients together to a smooth and moldable consistency. Give your child a piece of the play dough to knead on wax paper for modeling the dough into shapes and creative objects.
Nutty Buddy Spread
1 cup or your favorite nuts or seeds
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp honey
Salt to taste
Directions: Place the nuts or seeds in a food processor chop into smaller pieces. Add honey, salt and 1 Tbsp olive oil and continue to pulse until the paste is formed. If your food processor is large, just double the recipe. Place in a sealed container and refrigerate.
Spread on bread or toast and add jelly or other fruit for a delicious sandwich. It’s delicious on crackers, apples, bananas and celery. It can spread on so many different things for a delicious and nutritious treat. This spread can be used for breakfast or lunch.
Small Clear Bowls
Your favorite Gummy Fish
Directions: Prepare blue gelatin as directed. Pour into individual clear bowls. Place in refrigerator until it sets. When the gelatin has set, use a knife and make a slit about ½ inch from the edge of the bowl and slide the gummy fish into the slits. Place your gummy to look like they are swimming around in your bowl.
Remember when you are cooking in the kitchen with your kiddos, make sure they are participating in each step with you. I always like to begin by reading all the directions one time through and then get started. Have fun and enjoy the time, because it flies by and these are memories that will forever be in your heart. They certainly are in mine.
