The Breakfast Myth…Is it the most important meal of the day? (Part 1)

E-Mealz, breakfast, Eggs in a nestThe Breakfast myth states that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  A step in the right direction is to start off the day listening to that myth.  Its not really a myth, it’s a meal that gives you the energy you need to perform mentally and physically in your daily tasks.  While adults need breakfast to perform at their best, kids need it even more.  Their growing bodies and developing brains rely on regular intake of food.  As important as it is, many people still skip it because they either don’t have time or can’t stomach it.   My own children have a bad habit of wanting to look over breakfast but I always insist they put something in their stomachs.  Kids going to school really do need breakfast but often refuse the offer as they rush out the door.  Let your kids know how important breakfast is and how it will make such a difference in how they perform each and every day.  Use some of the following tips to get started and then look for more recipes and ideas to come in the following weeks.

TIPS:

Information is Important.  Make sure your children understand the importance of eating breakfast versus skipping it.  With eating breakfast you help with better nutrition, better test scores in school, better attention span and overall better mood.

Go To Bed.  Go to bed at a decent hour and get your full nights rest and it will be easier to get up in the morning a few minutes earlier to give yourself the time to prepare and/or eat breakfast.  This is a big help for those who need time to wake up before they eat or tend to oversleep.

Manage your morning instead of your morning managing you.  To get your kids motivated about getting up and eating breakfast in the morning, you need to make sure your time is managed wisely.  Establish a morning routine that works best for everyone involved and allows plenty of time to get everything done.  Eliminating the “rushing out the door” feeling will bring calmness to the morning and give children the feeling that time does permit to sit down and eat.  Take certain steps out of the morning “to do” list by getting done what you can the night before.  This includes anything that can be done to make breakfast preparation easier.

Consistency is Key.  Kids thrive on routine and consistency.  Establish breakfast in your household so that it becomes expected and not an exception.   If it becomes a habit of theirs when they are young, it will most likely carry over to their adult life.

Don’t wait or hesitate.  Start with a breakfast plan before school starts so that the routine will already be in place.   This will make it much easier on everyone when those early morning days come.

    My husband and I are child free now. I got diagnosed dairy/gluten intolerant in January and have been struggleing on my own. Your menus and recipes are wonderful but the gluten free are way too much food for two and there can be too many substitutions in the any store menu for two. The dairy subs I have no real trouble with. Are you planning a Gluten free menu for two?
