May is Mediterranean Diet Month, and today we’re kicking off the month with an overview of the health benefits of olive oil.You may also want to read the post we did earlier on Health Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet to get a bigger picture of the Mediterranean Diet as well.
Olive oil is a key ingredient in the Mediterranean Diet, resulting in a diet that is high in monounsaturated fats and very low in saturated fat. Replacing saturated fats like butter with olive oil may reduce your LDL (AKA “bad”) cholesterol and lower your risk of developing heart disease. Monounsaturated fats in olive oil may also play a role in normalizing blood clotting and helping to prevent strokes.
In addition to being good for you heart, olive oil is also high in Vitamins E, A and K, which are needed to maintain good eye and bone health and keep your immune system strong. It is also rich in antioxidants, which help to protect your cells from oxidative damage that can lead to cancer and other diseases.
Olive oil has also been touted by the beauty world as an excellent skin and hair moisturizer.
